Cork City has new 'robot trees.'
Five high-tech CityTrees, costing some €350,000 for the year are being installed on St Patrick’s Street and on the Grand Parade near the City Library.
The trees are covered in mosses designed to filter harmful pollutants like fine dust particles and nitrogen oxides.
They also have built in sensors to gather air quality data and 40-inch TV screens to share information about air
quality in the city, as well as a built-in chair .
The City trees form part of Cork City Council's strategy to tackle pollution, which also includes the planting of 1,300
trees this year.
The 1st of our CityTrees were installed today on St Patricks St.
CityTrees help combat fine dust particle pollution &other pollution associated with traffic congestion.
Air pollution causes up to 1,300 deaths each yr, says @EPAIreland
