The 2017 law which made it illegal to buy sex in Ireland needs to be hardened in order to make it more effective.
The law was designed to protect sex workers by criminalising the buyers of sex.
However a newly published review of the law has found Gardai and the DPP have been struggling to enforce the legislation in its current form.
Barbara Condon from Ruhama, which supports sex workers, told RedFM News the findings of the review need to be implemented urgently to combat sexual exploitation:
"I think the Government now need to act swiftly the implement the recommendations, insuring that these criminals face justice and more women are protected from the physical and psychological harms of prostitution. So it is about giving the Gardaí the powers so that's going to be needed for the legislation brought before the Oireachtas."
