Cork hurling champions Sarsfields sacrificed their pitch in order to help locals in Glanmire as flood waters began rising in the village yesterday morning.

The GAA club opened large gates by their pitch which then 'essentially became a flood plain'.

Chairman of Sarsfields GAA Keith Mulcahy says within 45 minutes parts of Glanmire was overcome by water and in effort to relieve the pressure and protect homes across the road they opened the Club gates.

He described the aftermath on the Neil Prendeville Show.

"The field has craters in it now, the pitch drainage system that we have that burst as it couldn't handle the pressure of the water, that came up through the ground so we have holes in the field in certain parts.

"The generosity of people has been fantstic. People are saying that they'd come down with shovels and rakes or what have you.

"It's beyond that unfortunately. It's a job that has to be looked at professionally, it's a total rebuilding job really."
