A school principal in the city says the number of his pupils accessing emergency accommodation has doubled this year.
Almost 200 children in Cork and Kerry were declared as homeless according to the latest figures.
The INTO is calling for the Department of Education to ensure that no child is left behind because of circumstances beyond their control.
Speaking to RedFM News, Principal of Greenmount National School Finbarr Hurley says homelessness has a traumatic effect on children:
"We have seen in excess of a 50% increase in homelessness in this year alone, straight away it effects children, we see children that are sad, worried, afraid to separate from mom or dad because they're not sure how the day is going to go when they leave"
