Schools will continue to struggle to attract teachers unless their contracts and wages are vastly improved
Teaching unions says more incentives need to be offered in order to tackle the ongoing recruitment and retention problem in the sector
Speaking to RedFM News Aaron Wolfe Principal of Coláiste Eamann Rís in Cork city says some schools have had to drop subjects due to the teacher shortage
"Certain subject areas don't have the graduates anyway. So for example I am advertising a guidance counselling position, and I had zero applicants. Now we're a very attractive school to work in Cork city, but no applicants. Similarly for a woodwork position we only had four applicants. for a religion position, we only had four applicants and these are for 22 hour positions"
