New figures presented to the Cork County Council joint Policing Committee show that thefts from shops in Cork City and County are up 86% from this time last year.
The Echo report that there were 1,416 thefts between January and August of this year, compared to 763 for the same period yesterday.
Minor assaults were up 31%, while detections of possesion of drugs for sale or supply fell by 26%, from 1,485 to 1,073.
