A reception celebrating 100 years of diplomatic relations between Ireland and America has been delayed because of Hurricane Milton.

It's believed it was felt it would be inappropriate for the US president to be celebrating during one of the worst storms to hit the Florida region in 20 years.

Simon Harris will still meet with Joe Biden in the White House.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin is defending the visit in the midst of the United States' ongoing support for Israel:

"I think in the world of international diplomacy, we have to engage, of course. The United States has been a good friend to Ireland. President Biden in particular, has been a very good friend to Ireland in respect of Brexit, and stood up in crucial moments during that period, so you don't forget that either, but I mean diplomacy is about engaging with people across the world to try and bring these horrible situations to an end."
