Trade union SIPTU have described the death of 41-year-old John Murphy as a ‘tragedy’ and say their members at Stryker in Cork have been raising health and safety concerns there since 2019.
The father of three died in a Dublin hospital yesterday, following an explosion on the roof of one of the company’s buildings in Carrigtwohill in April.
John Murphy died yesterday after he was critically injured in a titanium explosion on the roof of Stryker's Annsgrove building in Carrigtwohill on the 18th of April.
He was rushed to Cork University Hospital with serious burns and was later transferred to a hospital in Dublin where he remained in a critical condition.
It's understood Stryker employees were informed of his death this morning.
The Health and Safety Authority launched an investigation and say they are aware of a fatality involving a Stryker employee.
A spokesman said their investigation is continuing.
In a statement this afternoon SIPTU expressed condolences to John Murphy's family and colleagues, and say while the circumstances of the tragedy have yet to be fully explained, it highlights the crucial importance of workplace safety.
