A Social Democrats TD is calling on the Housing Minister to reverse the trend in homelessness.

New figures show the number of people sleeping rough has risen by 355 to 8,830 in October.

There has been a 15 per cent increase in the number of children who became homeless in just two months.

In Cork city and county 440 people are registered as homeless.

68 families with 142 children are living in emergency accommodation in Cork and Kerry.

Deputy Cian O'Callaghan outlines what he wants Minister Darragh O'Brien to do:

"We need to have a situation where tenants cannot just be evicted for any reason. If a tenant is paying their rent, if they're not in breach of their rental agreement, they shouldn't be evicted. We need to recognise that when someone is renting, when the family's renting, this is their home and they may have roots in the community, children may be going to school and they may have made friends. To simply be able to uproot all of that, as can be done at the moment, has huge consequences."
