A specialist scanner in Cork University Maternity Hospital has only been used on one day out of almost eight months.

This is due to the fact that there is no consultant to operate it.

The €1 million translabial scanner is used to identify complications caused by the insertion of vaginal mesh.

Today's Irish Examiner is reporting that the machine in the CUMH was installed last November, on a training day when nine women were scanned.

The paper says that since then, no further translabial scans have taken place, as CUMH are trying to hire a consultant doctor to use the €1 million machine.

The use of vaginal mesh for urinary stress incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse surgeries was paused in public hospitals in 2018.
