A Status Yellow weather warning comes in to effect for Cork from midday.
Up to 50mm of rain is expected to fall here as well as Kerry, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal over the next 48 hours.
The poor conditions are the tail-end of Hurricane Sam which has been active over the Atlantic.
Liz Walsh of Met Eireann outlines what's in store.
"There is a spell of wet weather on the way for the western half of the country, not just today but tomorrow as well.
"There's a frontal zone that's effectively going to stall over western areas.
"For that reason we've issued yellow rainfall warnings for a number of counties in the west, northwest and southwest.
