Students receiving CAO offers this week say the excitement of starting college has already been ruined by the lack of accommodation available.

UCC Students Union say they're looking forward to welcoming over 4,000 first year students next week but they're inundated with messages from people who haven't secured their accommodation yet.

The Students Union are giving advice to incoming students who haven't found somewhere to live and say as people get more desperate, they could fall for accommodation scams.

Aoibhe O'Brien is the Welfare Officer at UCC Students Union and is helping students find rooms after struggling to find one herself in first year.

Speaking to RedFM News, Aoibhe says the situation isn't improving:

"I was in the exact same boat when I was in first year I didn't get any accommodation with the lottery and I actually had a sleeping bag at the bottom of my friends bed in her UCC accommodation, I was staying with her most days of the week are having to commute an hour back to Clonakilty spending crazy money on the bus and having to get up at like 6am or 7am in the morning to make my 9am [class]. It's tough."
