A supervised injection centre in the city could help to prevent certain risks associated with drug use.
That's the opinion of Cllr Dan Boyle who is a member of Cork's Drugs and Alcohol Task Force.
The idea of a centre in the city has been discussed for years, and with permission granted for a centre in Dublin recently, advocates here say it's now a very real possibility for Cork.
Issues such as funding for a suitable site and programme as well as public consultation and staffing mean it could be years before a centre is opened...
However Cllr Boyle says a mobile unit could be operational in the meantime.
Speaking to RedFM News, Cllr Dan Boyle outlines the issues such a centre could help to solve
"In the process of being in an addiction cycle, people are constantly faced with being exposed to the darker side of society - people who are selling the drugs and doing so in the worst possible circumstances. So the people's not only health but safety and the communities where the transactions are taking place, are put at risk. What an injection centre does it puts a level of safety and puts health prominence on it - you're dealing with the addiction, creating a safe environment, you're removing the additional risk factors"
