Councils around the country are expecting a surge of exemption applications from the owners of XL Bully Dogs ahead of Saturday's ban

From February 1st it will be against the law to own an XL Bully dog, without an exemption from a local authority.

XL bully dogs without a certificate may be seized and destroyed.

The ban comes after a number of attacks involving the breed, including the death of a young woman in Limerick.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show Vincent Cashman of the Cork Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the number of exemption applications so far has been very low:

"It's incredibly low. Right or wrong with this, people knew this was coming up since the 12th of July last year. They may not have had all of the details regarding it but they knew they had to have their dog license. They know they had to have it microchipped, they knew they had to have it neutered. They could have had all of that work done in the lead up to this."
