The clinical director of an addiction treatment centre in Cork says the gambling industry needs to take more responsibility for preventing people from becoming addicted to gambing.
Mick Devine from the Tabor group was speaking ahead of the start of a new certificate course developed with UCC to allow people working in drug and treatment treatment to help people who may also be living with problematic gambling.
The 12 week online course is the first of it's kind in the country and begins later this month.
Tabor have reported an increase in the number of people contacting them for help to stop gambling and say the pandemic has made matters worse.
Speaking to RedFM News, Mick Devine from Tabor outlines how the gambling industry can intervene before someone becomes a gambling addict.
"There should be some responsibility on that staff member to interrupt that gambling activity, and that should be expected.
"I think the regulation needs to come from outside the industry, and that there should be legislation regulating the gambling industry, around for example limits on how much a person can gamble."
