A Cork based addiction counsellor says people with a serious gambling problem often experience suicidal thoughts.
It comes as a UCC study found a link between gambling in 23 deaths by suicide in Ireland between 2015 and 2020.
Research also found that 81% of people receiving treatment for problem gambling have thought about suicide.
Speaking to RedFM News, Mick Devine from Tabor Group in Cork says things can often take a turn for the worst for people with a gambling addiction:
"People with gambling addiction, they're in very stressed situations. there is a time when the gambling alleviates this stress, but then that thing take a turn for the worse, And people lose, they're losing, maybe losing a lot of money. People are off, and feel they're in very dire circumstances, and they often take self destructive measures."
