Sarsfields GAA pitch has been left decimated after yesterday's flooding in Glanmire
Cork Hurling champions Sarsfields opened their gates and left the rising flood waters flow onto their pitch as the water was threatening homes and businesses across from the club
Chairman of Sarsfields GAA Keith Mulcahy says in the space of 45 minutes parts of Glanmire was overcome by water and they were left with no choice but to open the gates to protect other properties
He described the moment he made the decision on the Neil Prendeville Show
"I firmly believe a pitch is a pitch - it can be replaced - people's homes are different. I mean, people love their homes and obviously look at you know, we just felt that the decision was the right thing to do just open the gate, let the water in. All the lower level is damaged, the gym is destroyed, and equipment in there as well, or spinning room our main office and our bar cellar lot of stock is damaged there as the water level was very, very high"
Tánaiste Michael Martin says the Government will help the club recover:
"They opened up their pitch to save a housing estate from flooding, and we will make sure that the club that we work with the club, to help them in any way possible, because that's the kind of intervention that makes a huge difference to a community and it's quick decision making. And we applaud that.
