Taoiseach Says Former Debenhams Workers Have Been Treated Very Badly

330 workers are set to lose their jobs at the firm's two Cork stores leaving staff to fight for a better redundancy deal

The Taoiseach has said the former Debenham's workers have been treated very badly and the company should honour previously agreed redundancy commitments.

330 workers are set to lose their jobs at the firm's two Cork stores on Patrick Street and Mahon Point with former employees staging several protests in recent weeks including blocking the removal of stock from the city centre store as they fight for a better redundancy deal

Hundreds of workers in the city centre have lost their jobs in recent weeks with the closure of stores such as Monsoon, Oasis, Warehourse and Clarks

In the Dail today Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said nothing has been done to protect workers by Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil over the past four years.

Micheál Martin has promised legislation will be brought forward to change laws that allow companies to use devices to avoid paying workers their entitlements.
