Taxi drivers in Cork are being trained to help in river rescues.
The RNLI has begun training taxi drivers at Cork Penny Dinners' new warehouse.
Drivers are being shown how to use a throw-bag containing a rope that unfurls around 20 feet when the bag is thrown.
It's hoped the move will mean that people entering the water can be helped before the emergency services arrive
Speaking to RedFM News, Caitriona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners says the initiative will save lives.
"It just makes sense because taxis are on the road 24/7, and all it needs is for someone to flag down a taxi.
"If they don't have a throw bag, they can get on the radio to say 'who's in the vicinity with a throw bag?' and they can get to the point as soon as possible.
"They tie a belt around their waist to throw the bag in, that person can then pull themselves into the wall and give rescue services time to get there."
