The supply of teachers is at crisis level with back-to-school just a week away.
Nearly 70 posts remain unfilled at primary and secondary schools across Cork city and county.
The Irish Primary Principals' Network, which represents primary school principals, says it is "acutely concerned about the challenges schools are facing" when it comes to recruiting for the new school year.
Schools have been engaged in teacher recruitment campaigns since May, with large numbers of schools reporting that they still have unfilled posts
Former ASTI President and Cork-based teacher Ann Piggott told RedFM News that the shortage of teachers will compromise the ability of schools to meet the needs of all pupils.
"Principals are reporting that they can't get staff in certain subjects; in particular subjects like Maths - I see there are a lot of English jobs advertised - and subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Home Economics and Irish," she said.
"I think that people are choosing to do other work, as opposed to teaching, or many young teachers are going abroad because they still find it very hard to get permanent work here," she added.
