Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition to save the Marina Market in Cork City.
The online petition was created in the wake of the Council’s decision to refuse a retention planning application from the Market operators CPR Properties, along with proposed plans to extend the market’s footprint.
The petition was created by Cork man Charlie Clarke, and since going online this week has now been signed nearly 24,000 times.
CPR Properties lodged an application in January to continue using the site as a market-food emporium and had planned to create a function space and coffee roastery, along with the construction of a mezzanine for further seating.
However the Council refused permission, saying that the infrastructure on Kennedy Quay was "insufficient for existing and proposed use".
CPR Properties has four weeks to lodge an appeal with An Bord Pleanála against the Council’s decision, with the appeals process potentially taking up to a year.
