Photos on social media show the broken cross on the ground next to the church.
The 15 foot cross, which was added to the church in 1962, was damaged during Storm Franklin recently and resulted in the temporary closure of the church.
A GoFundMe campaign to replace the cross has been launched and has raised almost €4,900.
The Parochial Hall Gurranabraher say the people of the community, particularly the older generation have been very helpful and have donated money to replace the cross.
No one was injured in the incident, however it's thought the recently replaced roof may have been damaged when the cross fell.
In a statement on Facebook, the Church says work on erecting scaffolding was to have begun today and the damage is being assessed.
