Cork city’s population is expected to grow by between 50-60% by 2040, and the redevelopment of the Docklands area is expected to play a big part of that growth.

The IDA say developing sustainable transport links should be a top priority and not thought of after business and housing developments.

Speaking at a Cork Chamber Breakfast Briefing, CEO of IDA Ireland Michael Lohan says the success of the growth of the city will depend on an efficient transport system:

"As a city, you have an opportunity to get it right. As you look to the growth, that growth can't happen, and as you look to the Docklands, that growth can't happen unless we ensure that we have sustainable modes of transport, sustainable living that can happen within those centres. We need to get that enabling infrastructure in place at the outset, as opposed to it becoming a secondary after the commercial elements or the business elements, I think it is so important"
