The Tanaiste says Ian Bailey should have been tried by an Irish jury and we failed in our duty to convict the French film producer's murderer

Micheal Martin's comments come as Sophie Toscan du Plantier's family seek a public inquiry into her 1996 murder in West Cork

Ian Bailey, who died in January, was the self confessed prime suspect in her murder however he always denied any involvement in her death

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show Frank Buttimer, who was Ian Bailey's solicitor, described the Tánaiste's remarks as extraordinary

"I'm gobsmacked at Micheal Martin's approach to this. Leave aside even the Ian Bailey specifics, Micheal Martin is just trampling over our system of justice. It's really quite surprising for a government minister to disparage our system of justice in such a fashion in the general scheme of things"
