Prison officers say practically every cell in the facility has been doubled up yet inmates are still sleeping on mattresses on the floor of cells
The Prison Officers Association says prisons are already at “breaking point” and have described the situation as "ticking time bomb"
Speaking to RedFM News Gabriel Keaveny of the IPOA says overcrowded cells are a recipe for disaster
"If you look at Cork specifically - the entirety of the "A" Division in Cork is fully doubled up, actually, practically all of Cork, disregarding a handful of cells, is all doubled up. And with that, there's about 50 people sleeping on floors all the time. It's just not able to cope. Cork is chronically overcrowded, it's one of the worst prisons we have, even though it's one of the newest prison in the system"
