The message that Cork city is not safe at night needs to be challenged
It comes as businesses in the city will be paid to keep their lights on to create safer streets throughout the winter months
Cork Business Association will pay a €250 subsidy to participating businesses in its Leave A Light On initiative which will run until January
Night time economy advisor with Cork City Council Fiona Collins says while more Gardai are needed, the city has plenty to offer people at night
"I think there's a definite conversation that needs to have around it. There's a lot of fear out there, and I think it's people just not used to going out into the city at night. I think people need to reappreciate what we have in the city and allow them to come back in and see it. You can see from nights like Culture Night, that people are really happy to come in and experience things when when there is an opportunity to do so"
