The number of households on a boil water notice has more than doubled in the last 12 months
The Environmental Protection Agency says the notices are focused mainly in the southern half of the country
Here in Cork Whitegate remains under a water restriction notice which has been in place since October last year while Killavullen was under a boil water notice for over a year
Programme Manager with the EPA, Noel Byrne, says the number of long-term boil water notices were up last year:
"We have also seeing that the number of boil water notice in place for greater than thirty days in 2023 was forty six, and this is almost double the number that was there in 2022. So really, what the EPA is seeing here is that it highlights the need for Uisce Eireann to focus on improving resilience at supplies, to prevent issues from escalating and impacting on people"
