New research from UCC and Alcohol Action Ireland shows four people every day are dying from alcohol related harm and illness, 40 more than previous data suggests.
The report found that the largest number of alcohol related deaths from illness arise from liver cancer, cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases combined.
It comes as Alcohol Action Ireland say parts of the Public Health Act have yet to be enacted including a broadcast watershed for alcohol advertisements on TV and radio and health information labeling of alcohol products.
Head of Communications with Alcohol Action Ireland Eunan McKinney says suicides that are directly attributed to alcohol often go unreported:
"Nearly 27% of suicides and self harm instance are attributable to alcohol as well so there's a there's a variety of issues or variety of deaths sadly which occur because of alcohol related harms that don't get recorded as such."
