It was planned for waters 240km south of Cork but has been moved further out into international waters following protests by fishermen and the government.
Russia has also written to Ireland seeking clarity on its stance around EU foreign policy, amid escalating tensions over Ukraine and a possible invasion.
Security Correspondent with the Times Ireland, John Mooney, says Russia's interest in Ireland has greatly increased in recent weeks:
"Many in the security services believe the Russian state is very much involved in organizing an influence campaign within Ireland and so far is that there's a lot of information about Russia being put into the Irish domain via social media channels, but also through more traditional forms of communications."
