The leader of Sinn Féin says a situation where the government would “stagger on, on Taoiseach number three” without calling a general election is not credible.
Deputy Mary Lou McDonald has repeated her calls for an election one week after Leo Varadkar announced he will step down as Taoiseach.
The new Fine Gael leader Simon Harris has ruled out an early election and says the current Government will stay in place until next year.
Speaking to RedFM News in Bandon Mary Lou McDonald was asked who her party would be willing to enter into a coalition with
"We'll cross all bridges as we come to them, I still believe that the best outcome is the opportunity of Government without Fianna Fail or Fine Gael for the first time in history. But I have said consistently after the election, that I'll talk to everybody. Why? Because I actually respect the people and when people cast their vote and say, "This is who we have selected" Of course I'm going to respect that"
