Parents are being urged to be vigilant after it emerged that a child has died in Ireland after contracting Strep A.

A Cork pharmacist says it's vital that parents make themselves aware of the signs of Strep A as prompt action will result in early medical intervention.

Symptoms include a high fever, severe muscle aches, nausea and vomiting along with stomach pain.

A leading homeless charity helped over 22,000 people last year.

That's according to the latest annual report for the Simon Communities of Ireland.

The organisation provided 119,291 nights of emergency accommodation throughout 2021, while 5,760 people were supported by Simon's rough sleeping and outreach teams.

There is an urgent need to reform the Mental Health Act, 2001 to protect the rights of people receiving mental health treatment and care in hospital.

That’s according to the Mental Health Commission, which is appearing before an Oireachtas committee today.

The organisation says broader regulation of mental health services is needed.

The government needs to ban alcohol industry-funded programmes from Irish schools.

That's the call from the Irish Community Action on Alcohol Network, which says such programmes are totally inappropriate.

Drinkaware has delivered its programme to 15,000 students to date, according to the network.
