A Cork Dairy farmer has expressed concern at the move by four supermarkets to cut the cost of their own brand butter from today

The move comes after milk prices were cut by supermarkets last Friday, which farmers claim will threaten the viability of many dairy farmers.

CSO figures show butter production decreased in March, while there was a decline in domestic milk intake by creameries and pasteurisers.

The Health Minister has today announced a 25 million euro investment to boost staffing levels in the country's acute hospitals.

It comes on day two of the Irish Nurses' and Midwives' Organisation's annual conference - which Stephen Donnelly is due to address tomorrow.

Another interest rate rise is on the cards today.

The European Central Bank looks set to announce yet another hike to its base lending rate, as it battles to cool inflation in the Eurozone.

Analysts are expecting a rise of a quarter of one percent, however some fear it could be as high as half a percentage point.

Plans for a €100m retail outlet centre in East Cork are to move ahead.

The Irish Examiner report that the firm behind the plans, Rioja Estates, has reactivated its plans for the outlet village near Carrigtwohill.

The firm says the the centre would create 850 jobs, and would attract an estimated 220,000 shoppers each year.
