Therapy services have begun at St. Killian’s Special School in Mayfield following a lengthy campaign by parents and teachers
St. Killian’s Parents Unite came together 12 months ago to advocate for the reinstatement of therapeutic interventions at the school which caters for 104 pupils
The school has been included in the second phase of schools selected for the Therapy Pilot Scheme and in the meantime is benefitting from HSE funding for the provision of private therapy
Speaking to RedFM News Eibhlin Gleeson, chair of St Killian's Parents Unite says these interventions are vital to ensure their children reach their full potential:
"They are fundamental really, it would be all but impossible for a lot of these children to access their education without the intervention of these therapies. Children who are non speaking, children who have complex behavioural problems, children who have difficulty concentrating. There's a suite of reasons why children need these supports"
