A student, who received over 600 points in the Leaving Cert, says the third level system is unfair, after he missed out on his first-choice course.
Grade inflation and a higher number of CAO applicants saw more courses than ever pushed over 600 points, when CAO offers were published yesterday.
The points needed to study medicine at UCC increased by 7 to 738, while Arts remained the same at 300 however accounting jumped by almost 50 points to 553
Business and information is the most popular course in the country with almost 7,800 first round offers.
18-year-old Ciaran McCann says more college places are needed to accommodate high-achieving students.
"I was stunned that I didn't get it with the second highest possible Leaving Cert you can get, it floors you, it's hard to describe the feeling.
"I know people who got 625 points, did the absolute best they could do, and still f ail to get into their course just because of randomness.
"The courses need to update with the desires of the public. If lots of people ar going for medicine, you need two make up new spaces for medicine."

Cllr. Kelleher was speaking as he welcomed a plan unveiled by Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris, to secure 10,000 new apprentice registrations per year across a variety of trades and industries by 2025.
