This summer's weather is being described as a "Europe of two halves".

Parts of the continent are experiencing temperatures of over 40 degrees and hot weather warnings.

Meanwhile, at home there have been cooler and unsettled conditions.

Met Eireann's Gerry Murphy, explains why

"The the reason that there's such a split is the jet stream, which is a large band of winds that separates the warmer air to the south the cooler air to the north. So in recent weeks, we've been all the time to the north of that jet stream with temperatures either average or below average, while to the south, most of Europe has been to the south of that jet stream with the warm air persisting, all the time, bringing those very hot conditions"
