Thousands of homes and businesses are without power this morning, as Storm Barra hits the south and west coasts.
The River Lee burst its banks in the city centre earlier and City Council say high tide passed with flood waters flowing across South Mall from the riverside quays at Morrisons Island.
The flood water reached streets such as Pembroke Street and Phoenix Street but did not impact on properties and did not enter Oliver Plunkett Street.
Traffic on Lavitts Quay was reduced to one lane before high tide due to flood waters. Wandesford Quay was also closed off to traffic in the run-up to high tide.
Manager of the Imperial Hotel on South Mall in Cork City, Sinead Ryan, was among the staff rushing to divert flood waters away from the building this morning.
“We were getting the flood barriers up, it’s about 2/3 minutes grin getting into the hotel.
“It stops the lobby flooding and our cafe. The last time it was flooded it went up past my ankles.”
