An over height vehicle at the Jack Lynch Tunnel this morning led to the closure of the southbound bore of the Tunnel
The incident occurred at around 8am and had a a significant impact on rush hour traffic with delays of between 30 and 50 minutes being reported on approaches to the Dunkettle Interchange
In a statement issued to RedFM News Transport Infrastructure Ireland said an over height vehicle was detected this morning during peak rush hour and this caused major delays.
Gardai were on the scene shortly after the event and removed the over height vehicle.
The TII statement added that there is a break in the barrier approaching the tunnel entrance that allows for vehicles to be removed and outlined that the over height detection system is there to protect the tunnel and its inner workings.
The statement concludes that if there was significant damage caused to the tunnel, they would be forced to close the tunnel for safety reasons, and that would cause untold distribution to the Cork region for the duration of the closure
