It's emerged that two Cork schools were allocated a traffic warden after their names were pulled out of a hat.

City Councillors say the system highlights the need for additional funding to employ more wardens as less than half the schools in the city have one.

Green Party Councillor Dan Boyle has questioned the qualification criteria and believes the appointment of a traffic warden to schools should be decided on traffic volume and the danger that exists in a particular area.

Speaking to RedFM News Cllr Dan Boyle says the qualification criteria needs to be reviewed.

"My unhappiness was about some of the criteria that they used to reduce the number of schools to be considered.

"A school in my ward, the Educated Together on Grattan Street, I would argue is badly in need of it.

"What the introduced was the criteria that if they had a pelican crossing that they wouldn't be considered.

"How this is applied is very much up to question, but I think the criteria should be the speed of traffic, the amount of traffic, the amount of danger that exists, and it's not something we're getting right in the council."
