Una Ring was reacting to the news that tough new laws on stalking and non-fatal strangulation are to be drawn up before Easter with hopes high that the law will be passed before the end of the Summer.

The Justice Minister is proposing the changes to make the law "clearer and stronger" and will include explicit reference to stalking as a criminal offence and it will update the law
to ensure in includes all forms of modern communications.

Youghal woman Una Ring teamed up with Eve McDowell from Galway - after they were both subjected to horrific stalking campaigns by men they barely knew - to lead a campaign for the new standalone stalking offence.

Speaking to RedFM News Una says she's relieved to see the bill come to fruition and is hopeful that the brutal murder of Ashling Murphy last week could prove to be a watershed moment for women in Ireland:

"You need tragedy to bring change and only for Ashling's tragic death, I'm 100% this wouldn't have been happening this week, you know, and because four months ago, the Department of Justice told us blatantly that they were not going to revisit it until at least 2023. So they were quite happy with with the way it covered everything which we weren't because the stalking still wasn't a crime. So unfortunately, it took poor Ashling's death for this to happen, but I've been more or less guaranteed by Helen McAtee that it will, it will be passed sooner rather than later."
