The Department of Transport says it will engage with local authorities before any further reduction of speed limits.

L roads have been cut to 60 km/h down from 80km/h with further speed reductions on secondary roads expected this year.

Locals in West Cork say reductions on roads like the N71 in Bandon could cause huge travel disruption and want their voices heard before any futher changes to speed limits.

Speaking to RedFM News, Minister of State for Rural Transport, Jerry Buttimer says reducing speed limits is vital in order to reduce road fatalities

"The action plan is under development, and there will  be collaboration between key role safety, stakeholders, and the Minister O'Brien, with the RSA will endeavour to look at how we can ensure that there is further consultation and engagement with local authorities. The introduction of reduced speed limits is a means of reducing fatalities and accidents"
