Transport Infrastructure Ireland has warned the City Council that changes being proposed for the city development plan are taking Cork in the wrong direction.

The new five-year City Development Plan took effect in August and is now up for review.

The CDP caps the number of parking spaces in different parts of the authority's jurisdiction.

Proposed changes to the plan would increase that number.

TII believe that’s these changes could encourage more people to use private cars, and potentially undermine public transport in the short to medium term.

In a statement to RedFM News, the Coty Council said:

"The objective of the variation is to better align the car parking standards with the current provision of public transport.  This will be reviewed constantly, and form part of the formal 2 year review of the development plan, once the routes of the public transport, Bus Connects and LRT are finalised.  The proposed standards are maximum standards i.e. they cannot be exceeded, which, when compared with other cities are relatively low and support active travel and public transport".
