Dylan Spaenij, a second-year Software Development student at Munster Technological University (MTU), has been awarded the ‘Alejandro Andrade de la Flor Scholarship’ for the academic year 2022/2023 by cyber security advisory and solutions leader, Trellix.
Dylan was selected from a shortlist of six software development students from MTU’s Department of Computer Science. Trellix selected Dylan based on his academic achievements in first and second year, as well as on his interview, during which he showed great potential for innovation and leadership.
The scholarship is a stipend of €3,000 per year for third and fourth year. Dylan was also offered a work placement in Trellix’s Cork offices, providing him with the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the cyber security industry.
Trellix considers this scholarship a cornerstone of the company's relationship with MTU. By providing a bundled stipend and work experience, the scholarship ensures a pipeline of suitably talented graduates that will potentially return to the organisation upon graduation. Of the six previous recipients of the 'Alejandro Andrade de la Flor Scholarship', three have worked full time at Trellix after graduation.
“Maintaining close links with local universities such as MTU ensures we are considered by students when they seek full-time employment after graduating", said Jimmy Collins, Director of Software Engineering at Trellix. “We are thrilled to offer Dylan this scholarship opportunity, especially as a student in the software development field. We believe that investing in the future of MTU students is key to our own success and this scholarship is a great way to encourage young talent like Dylan into the security industry, as well as providing the platform to harness the energy and abilities of students and graduates more generally.”
Trellix is a new brand. In 2022, FireEye merged with McAfee's enterprise business to launch Trellix, an extended detection and response (XDR) company. Whilst the scholarship began with McAfee, the Trellix management team in Cork saw the benefits of this scholarship and collaboration with MTU, and they were thrilled to continue it perpetually.
Head of Computer Science at the MTU Bishopstown Campus, Dr Sean McSweeney said: “We are delighted that Trellix is continuing the relationship with MTU. We are thrilled for Dylan, he is an exemplary student and a great asset to the Department of Computer Science. We’re confident that he will take full advantage of this opportunity with Trellix and go on to further his career in the field of cyber security solutions.”
