The President of the Teacher's Union of Ireland has told the Education Minister that the trust between teachers and the Department of Education is "teetering on a knife edge".
In a speech that included Leaving Cert reform, the housing crisis and quotes from Hamlet, TUI President Liz Farrell told Minister Norma Foley the government's "hollowing out of the profession" by moratoriums in 2009 and 2012 was a "scandalous" act of "government vandalism".
Liz Farrell described the bureaucratic workload facing many teachers as a festering sore that is forcing many out of the profession.
She was also met with a standing ovation from the 500 strong crowd when she raised the issue of newly qualified teachers leaving the country:
