On Sunday, 1st October two Civil War Volunteers, Captain Timothy Kennefick and Section Commander Patrick Murphy, were remembered at separate events in Mid-Cork. Both men were killed by Free State forces 101 years ago during the course of the Civil War.
A wreath laying ceremony was held at the Captain Timothy Kennefick monument at Nadrid, Coachford on Sunday morning. Later in the afternoon, a commemoration was held in honour of Section Commander Patrick Murphy at Leemount Cross, Carrigrohane.
Giving the address at the Patrick Murphy monument at Leemount Cross, Ballincollig local area representative Joe Lynch said:"Occasions such as this are vital. Not just to remember and to look back, but to look to tomorrow. Republicanism is growing stronger.
"It is incumbent on us, as the Republicans of today, to use that support to bring about the 32 County Republic that Patrick Murphy - and all those who have given their lives for Irish freedom - died for.
"I believe we are closer than ever to achieving our aims. In the north, Michelle O’Neill waits to become First Minister in a State that was gerrymandered to ensure that could never happen. In the south, Mary Lou McDonald will - if we continue on our current trajectory - lead a government in this State.
"We truly honour Patrick Murphy and his comrades by resolving to finish the job - to bring a United Ireland to fruition. That was his aim, and that remains our objective today."
Both events were organised by the Tom Barry/Leo Murphy Sinn Féin Cumann (Ballincollig).
