49 students were caught using artificial intelligence to cheat at the University of Galway this year.
Some students have been using ChatGPT, an artificial language platform, to help write their essays for them.
However, the University of Galway is one of the few third level institutions to collect AI cheating data according to a Freedom of Information response.
Prof Barry O'Sullivan at the University College Cork says the third level sector needs to tackle this issue:
"It isn't sufficient for a student to simply tell you that they're using AI in their academic work, because the content itself can be plagiarized. So it's really important that there are proper statements and policies in place, even at the individual course and module level, and to allow students to understand exactly how and when they should be able to use it and in what capacity."
