University College Cork is highlighting the need for people to stand up and call out sexist attitudes and remarks.

Professor Louise Crowley, from the School of Law in UCC, and the Director of the college's Bystander Intervention programme, says all forms of sexist abuse, including verbal, should be challenged.

"It's really important that the public becomes aware of the importance of calling out every form of abuse, so calling out the leering, the cat calling, the groping, the unacceptable use of language and other inappropriate and unwanted advances is just as important.

"If we don't do that, we're giving a sense of permission to those who are involved in this behaviour, that this behaviour is socially acceptable, and there has to be absolute social outrage at all forms of unacceptable behaviour."
