Three Irish students have been named among the world’s top 25 undergraduate students at the Global Undergraduate Awards today.

Maggie Tighe, a Music and Classical Studies in University College Cork was included, as well as Ulster University Environmental Sciences student Kenna White and Law student Julia Best of Trinity College Dublin were all Global Winners in their categories.

Maggie, Kenna and Julia beat off thousands of other students around the world to win the awards, which received submissions from 410 universities and colleges in 73 countries. The Global Undergraduate Awards is the world’s leading multi-discipline academic awards programme recognising undergraduate research.

Julia’s submission revolved around her work on Article 41.2 of the Irish constitution, the clause protecting a woman’s place in the home, and aimed to highlight the value that unpaid work brings to society. She is currently studying a Masters of Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Maggie’s win was in the Classical Studies discipline and her submission focused on the transformation of the pastoral genre in music. Maggie has just started a MPhil in Classics at Trinity College Dublin.

Kenna’s entry was focused on research into using aquatic plants to filter superbugs from water sources.

Commenting on the Executive Director for the Global Undergraduate Awards, Dr. Garret Maher, said:

‘’The success of Irish students this year just shows that the level of academic talent in Ireland is outstanding and far too often goes under the radar, especially for undergraduates. The purpose of the Global Undergraduate Awards is to support and value the work undergraduate students do by recognising its excellence and bringing it to a wider audience. ’’
