A group of UCC students staged a demonstration against the OPW's flood defence plans in the city earlier today.

The School of Architecture students stood on Parliament Bridge in the city centre this morning to call on the Office of Public works to drop their current plan.

The group have described it as a 'walls plan' and have warned that it won't protect the city from flooding.

The OPW say the scheme will run from Inniscarra Dam to the City Centre and will enhance connectivity to the river with new walkways.

Planners also say the plan will protect over 2,100 properties and is designed to protect against a one in one hundred year flood from the River Lee

The demonstration comes just one day after several parts of the city were flooded by record amounts of rainfall and just two days before the Save Cork City group bring their objection to the plan to the Supreme Court.

Speaking to RedFM News, one of the organisers of today's demonstration Conor Ryan, says he thinks that the current plan is outdated:

"The predicted costs were about €108 million and then investigations finalized it to be €298 million. It's just outrageous, it's a 10 year old plan that has not been updated or investigated to adapt towards the rapid climate chang we have at the moment. It's bizarre how it's still the same thing, it's a 10 year old plan that's supposed to last two to three years."
