UCC Students Union say they helped five female students whose drinks were spiked last week.

The Union's Welfare Officer Caoimhe Walsh says the spikings happened at three separate locations on the previous weekend and that it's very unusual for so many students to come forward in one week.

The issue of spiking came to national prominence last year following several reports of women including a UCC student in Limerick being needle spiked while on a night out.

Speaking to RedFM News, UCC Students Union Welfare Officer Caoimhe Walsh says the students were left very shaken by what happened to them.

"Last week I had seven students who came in who either had been spiked or thought they were spiked, and it turns out that five of them definitely were.

"Obviously it's really scary for that to happen to anyone, so e I'm really trying to push that it's just not acceptable and we definitely do not condone it.

"It's just a very upsetting thing to happen, you go out and you don't expect someone to do something like that to you.

"You think "it won't happen to me", and it does, and they're obviously shocked and very upset.

"They're doing ok now - I check in with them."
