Uisce Éireann says the newly established Water Quality Taskforce is helping to minimise water discolouration issues in Cork City
Homeowners affected by the brown water staged a protest outside the water providers offices over the discoloured water which they say has damaged washing machines, showers and ruined clothing
The utility says increased sampling, an enhanced flushing programme and continued mains replacement works are all helping to alleviate the brown water problem
Uisce Eireann's Brian O'Leary told RedFM News that there will always be low levels of discolouration as the ultimate solution is to replace the cast iron mains across the city
"There are approximately 300 kilometres of them, so that is not something that can happen overnight it's something that's going to take several decades. So we're always going to have levels of discoloration. Everything we're doing is working towards minimising the levels of discoloration that are out there. What we can do in the interim, is to try and target our flushing in the worst affected areas"
